Prospects for the Digital Transformation of the Chief Accountant Profession

Abstract

The formation of a digital business ecosystem is accompanied by an active transformation in all areas of the economy, including accounting. Combining accounting, control, analytical processes on a single information platform requires a theoretical and methodological rethinking of the functions and technologies of accounting. Of particular relevance is the need for digital transformation of the professional competencies of accountants or "accounting engineering". In the article, the authors, based on the results of a questionnaire survey of chief accountants of small and medium-sized businesses, assess the level of digitalization of accounting in the region, identify the degree of readiness of accountants for digital transformation, problems that hinder the development of this process. Noteworthy is the mechanism proposed by the authors for the transformation of the functions of the chief accountant, which includes 3 stages.
